BIG NEWS! DC Council Votes to End Homelessness for 795 Households & Fund Street Outreach
WE DID IT!
In just one day, the DC Council added $7 million for ending chronic homelessness to their budget. This is incredible news and we are so grateful to advocates like you who helped make this happen.
Earlier this month, the DC Council built on the Mayor’s proposed investments to end chronic homelessness with additional funding for permanent supportive housing (PSH) and homeless street outreach, two life-saving programs that are critical to ending long term homelessness in our community. It was an important step, but it wasn’t quite enough. So, we urged our policymakers to find every last dollar to invest in these critical programs.
Yesterday, thanks to your advocacy, the DC Council voted to end homelessness for almost 200 more individuals and to fully fund DC’s homeless street outreach network. This is huge! With these investments, next year’s budget will end homelessness for a grand total of 795 households.
This would not have been possible without all of you so THANK YOU for your continued commitment to your neighbors.
- This historic win is also thanks to Council Member Nadeau who introduced an amendment to scale back a tax incentive for high tech companies and invest instead in critical programs for our community. Head to Twitter and use the script below to thank Council Member Nadeau and her Council colleagues for their moral leadership in ending chronic homelessness!
” Thank you @BrianneKNadeau @charlesallen @marycheh @RobertWhite_DC @trayonwhite @VinceGrayWard7 @CM_Silverman @cmdgrosso @jackEvansWard2 for shoring moral leadership and voting to end chronic homelessness”
- Stay tuned for updates and to show your support for these historic investments between now the Council’s second budget vote, which will take place on May 28th.
We are so proud of the work of our Advocacy Team and our many partners across the community. Thank you for your continued support!
