Sad News At MK : We Miss You Darrell
Dear MK Community,
With deep sadness and permission from his family, I want to share that Darrell Jones passed away Thursday morning due to COVID-19.
Darrell was last onsite at Miriam’s Kitchen on Thursday, March 19. Since he was last at Miriam’s Kitchen more than six weeks ago, there is no risk of exposure to MK guests, volunteers, and staff.
Darrell was a security officer in the MK dining room since 2007. I remember interviewing him for the job those many years ago. I never imagined then that Darrell would have such an incredible impact and legacy at Miriam’s Kitchen. He is much loved. It is hard to fathom the dining room without his presence. He made all of us – guests, staff, and volunteers – feel safe. He was a gentle, sweet guy who had just the right balance of kindness and firmness.
In the coming days, we will try to figure out how MK can celebrate Darrell’s life and contribution to our mission. It’s such a weird time when we are not able to gather to celebrate him as we would normally.
Here are a couple ways you can show support for Darrell’s family:
If you’d like to send cards to Darrell’s family, you can send them to Miriam’s Kitchen (2401 Virginia Ave, NW, Washington DC 20037) and we will forward to them.
You can make a donation to support Darrell’s family at the GoFundMe page MK has created: https://www.gofundme.com/f/darrell-jones-memorial-fund….
Miriam’s Kitchen will also make a contribution. Kim Heller (Kimberly.Heller@miriamskitchen.org) is happy to help anyone who needs assistance making a donation through the website.
The MK family has already been supporting each other in beautiful ways and I encourage everyone to continue sharing stories and taking care of one another.
We miss you Darrell.
