Miriam’s Kitchen Applauds Mayor-Elect Bowser’s Appointment of Laura Green Zeilinger
Miriam’s Kitchen welcomes Mayor-elect Bowser’s selection of Laura Green Zeilinger to lead the D.C. Department of Human Services (DHS). As the current Executive Director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, Mrs. Zeilinger brings to this role not only an intimate understanding of our nation’s homelessness crisis, but also the collaborative skill set necessary to align various agencies and city leaders behind the one common goal of ending homelessness in the District of Columbia.
Mrs. Zeilinger also possesses a deep understanding of the District of Columbia’s homelessness crisis. As the former Deputy Director for Program Operations for the D.C. DHS, Mrs. Zeilinger designed and implemented the District’s Housing First Initiative, which connected 500 individuals and 80 families to housing in its first year alone. Her efforts led to the creation of more than 1,000 units of permanent supportive housing as part of the Homeless No More Plan.
We could not be happier with this appointment, and we look forward to working with Mayor-elect Bowser and Director Zeilinger. Together with other service providers, city leaders and concerned citizens, we can and will make history by ending chronic homelessness in Washington, D.C.
