Miriam’s Kitchen Awarded Second Consecutive Four-Star Rating by Charity Navigator

MIRIAM’S KITCHEN AWARDED SECOND CONSECUTIVE FOUR-STAR RATING BY CHARITY NAVIGATOR

Award Recognizes Non-Profit Organizations for Sound Fiscal Management, Commitments to Accountability and Transparency

July 8, 2013 – Washington, D.C. – Miriam’s Kitchen’s sound fiscal management practices and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator.  This is second consecutive year that Miriam’s Kitchen has earned a four-star rating, a feat accomplished by fewer than 20 percent of the organizations rated by Charity Navigator.

Miriam’s Kitchen is committed to ending chronic homelessness in Washington, D.C. by creating meaningful connections with displaced individuals, connecting them with permanent housing, and ensuring they have the necessary support to remain in housing. Miriam’s Kitchen advocates for permanent supportive housing as a long-term solution, while meeting short-term needs by providing healthy meals and high-quality social services to more than 5,000 homeless individuals each year.

Since 2002, using data-driven analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added a second dimension of Accountability and Transparency (A&T) to its rating methodology, and now reviews 17 governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, providing information on its web site for each of the charities it evaluates.  The A&T metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities have “best practices” that minimize the chance of unethical activities and whether they freely share basic information about their organization with their donors and other stakeholders.

“Miriam’s Kitchen’s coveted 4-star rating puts it in a very select group of high-performing charities,” according to Ken Berger, President and CEO, Charity Navigator. “Out of the thousands of nonprofits Charity Navigator evaluates, only one out of four earns 4 stars — a rating that, now, with our new Accountability and Transparency metrics, demands even greater rigor, responsibility and commitment to openness.  Miriam’s Kitchen’s supporters should feel much more confident that their hard-earned dollars are being used efficiently and responsibly when it acquires such a high rating.”

According to Miriam’s Kitchen President and CEO, Scott Schenkelberg, the award represents an extension of Miriam’s Kitchen’s mission to end chronic homelessness in Washington, D.C.

“Guests find in Miriam’s Kitchen a rock of stability and an anchor in their world that has none,” said Schenkelberg.  “That creates an enormous responsibility, not only to provide the support, services and sustenance that guests depend on, but to also operate with the highest level of financial standards. Our guests are at the center of all that we do, and we share this honor with them. ”
