Q: How do I start volunteering?
A. You must first attend a volunteer orientation session. Sign up for the next one here.
Q: May I come just once?
A:We are currently only bringing on volunteers who can commit to joining us once a month on an ongoing basis.
Q: I have a group that wants to volunteer. What do I do now?
A: We can only accommodate groups of 7 or less. If you have a group this size, then please email email@example.com about your interest.
Q: How many volunteers does Miriam’s Kitchen have?
A: We have over 1,500 individual volunteers and 150 corporate partners.
Q: Does Miriam’s Kitchen have volunteer opportunities on the weekends?
A: No. All of our volunteer opportunities are Monday – Friday. If you wish to volunteer on the weekend, please volunteer on our behalf at the Capital Area Food Bank or with Grate Patrol. Grate Patrol delivers breakfast to homeless men and women on Saturdays and Sundays at 5:45 am. Q: What is Miriam’s Studio?
A: Miriam’s Studio is our art therapy program. You might be surprised to learn that you don’t have to be an artist to help out in studio. Please read more about this award-winning program, and how you can get involved.
Q: I am not a social worker, can I be a case management volunteer?
A: You sure can! You will not be administering the case management services; you will be helping our guests in other ways and assisting our case managers.

Q: How do I get to Miriam’s Kitchen?
A: We’re located at the corner of 24th and G Streets NW, and just a few blocks from the Foggy Bottom metro stop. (Orange/Blue lines) We have limited parking for your car or bike in our garage – the entrance is located to the right of the main entrance. Whether you are driving, biking, walking or flying to your volunteer shift, please enter through the kitchen door at the bottom of our garage (please don’t use our guest entrance to the left of the main entrance).
Q: What should I wear when I volunteer?
A: Comfortable closed-toe shoes, 3/4 length or longer pants, short sleeved shirt. No tank tops, shorts, skirts, yoga pants or excessive jewelry. Please wear clothing that you are ok getting a little dirty or sweaty. Heads must be covered in the kitchen. All long hair must be restrained, in addition to being covered. We suggest you bring your own hat, but we do have a limited number of hats or hairnets.
Q: Can kids volunteer?
A: All volunteers must be at least 18 years old in the kitchen and in the dining room.
Q: What can kids do to help?
A: Kids can participate in our Trail Mix Program or organize a donation drive for us. We are always looking for people to organize a clothing food or toiletries drive on our behalf. Read more about how to do that here.
Q: What if I have to leave early or come late for my kitchen shift?
A: If you must leave early or come late for your shift, please cancel the shift and select one that better fits your schedule.
Q: What if I have an emergency and can’t make my shift?
A: You must cancel your shift if you have an emergency, or our system will reflect that you did not attend a shift.
